About Carennac

Carennac is a picturesque village in the Lot department of southwestern France, nestled on the banks of the Dordogne River. It is officially classified as one of "Les Plus Beaux Villages de France" (The Most Beautiful Villages of France), a testament to its charm and well-preserved medieval architecture.

Carennac's history dates back to Neolithic times, with the village developing significantly from the 11th century around a priory-deanery of the Order of Cluny. The first written mention of the village was in 937. In 1040, it was bequeathed to the Abbey of Cluny, which founded the priory and the Romanesque church of Saint-Pierre. The village and its monastic complex faced hardships during the Hundred Years' War and the French Revolution, but much of its original character has been preserved or restored.

Église Saint-Pierre (Saint Peter's Church) & Cloister: This Romanesque church from the 11th century is a central feature. Its most striking element is the beautifully sculpted 12th-century tympanum above the entrance, depicting Christ in Majesty surrounded by the four Evangelists and apostles. The church's interior boasts thirty carved capitals. Adjoining the church is a well-preserved cloister, combining Romanesque and Flamboyant Gothic elements, which offers a tranquil setting. Within the cloister's chapter house, you'll find the famous "Mise au Tombeau" (Entombment), a moving late 15th-century sculpture.

Château des Doyens (Dean's Castle): Built between 1529 and 1554 by order of Dean Alain de Ferrières, this 16th-century castle showcases clear Renaissance influences. It features an impressive Italian staircase, 17th-century painted ceilings and murals, and a ceremonial hall. The Château des Doyens served as the residence for Fénelon. Today, it functions as a cultural center and houses L'Espace Patrimoine, a heritage center and museum dedicated to the art and history of the Dordogne Valley.

Carennac is a popular destination for those seeking a peaceful retreat and a glimpse into medieval France. The village is known for its quiet charm and slow pace, making it ideal for leisurely strolls and appreciating its historical beauty. The local area also offers opportunities to explore the wider Dordogne Valley, known for its gastronomy, wines, and other "Plus Beaux Villages
