About Bassins des Lumières

The Bassins des Lumières in Bordeaux is the world’s largest digital art centre, offering a breathtaking fusion of art, light, and history. Housed in a former World War II German submarine base, this monumental space was transformed by the cultural organization Culturespaces and opened to the public in June 2020

The venue spans 13,000 square meters, with four vast water basins that reflect the immersive projections, creating a dreamlike, mirrored experience.

It uses 90 video projectors and 80 speakers to bring artworks to life across 12,000 square meters of projection surface.

The exhibitions are immersive digital shows featuring classical and modern artists—think Van Gogh, Klimt, Dalí, Gaudí, and more.

The base itself is a relic of wartime engineering—massive concrete walls, bombproof roofing, and mooring bays once used for U-boats. Now, it’s a place where art dances across water and stone, accompanied by music and narration.

Located in the Bacalan district of Bordeaux, the Bassins des Lumières is accessible by tram, bus, or bike. It’s also included in the Bordeaux CityPass, which offers access to multiple cultural sites.
