Funchal

Funchal is the capital of Madeira, a vibrant Atlantic city blending history, culture, and nature. It’s famous for its amphitheatre-like bay, lush gardens, wine traditions, and lively markets, making it one of Portugal’s most attractive destinations.

Funchal is the largest city on the island, located on the south coast, facing the Atlantic Ocean, and its name is derived from funcho (fennel), a wild herb abundant when settlers arrived in the 15th century.

Settlement began around 1420–1425, elevated to city status in 1508 by King Manuel I. Sugar (“white gold”) and wine were crucial to its economy, turning Funchal into a key Atlantic trading point.

Mild year-round, with sea temperatures between 18–24°C, perfect for swimming and water sports. Funchal is especially popular for New Year’s Eve fireworks, considered among the best in the world.

In short, Funchal offers a unique mix of cosmopolitan charm and natural beauty. You can stroll historic streets, sip Madeira wine, ride a cable car over the city, and end the day watching the sun set over the Atlantic.
