Domus Flavia

The Domus Flavia was the public wing of Emperor Domitian’s palace on the Palatine Hill, built in 92 AD as a monumental space for imperial ceremonies, audiences, and banquets.

The layout mirrored Roman social and cosmic order — public rituals in the Domus Flavia, private life in the Domus Augustana, and symbolic dominion in the Stadium.

Built by: Emperor Domitian (r. 81–96 AD)

Function: Served as the public and ceremonial section of the imperial palace, distinct from the private Domus Augustana and the Stadium garden complex./p>

Domus Augustana

The Domus Augustana was the private residential wing of Emperor Domitian’s palace on the Palatine Hill, serving as the emperor’s living quarters and retreat from public life.

Built by: Emperor Domitian around 92 AD, as part of his vast palace complex

Upper Level: Included two large peristyles (courtyards with colonnades), closely connected to the Domus Flavia, possibly used for semi-public functions.

Lower Level: More secluded, with intimate rooms, elaborate decoration, and a unique courtyard featuring the Peltae Fountain — a pool with crescent-shaped islands resembling Amazonian shields.

3rd Peristyle: Featured a vast pool with a central island, possibly housing a temple to Minerva or a mythological seascape.

Exedra Overlooking Circus Maximus: A monumental curved gallery allowed the emperor to watch races from a privileged vantage point.
