About Cefalu
Cefalù is a coastal town on Sicily’s northern shore, built beneath a dramatic crag called the Rocca and celebrated for its medieval streets, sandy beaches, and layered archaeological record.
The site has prehistoric and classical antecedents; ancient sources call it Kephalodion (“little head”) and archaeological finds show Bronze Age, Greek, and Roman occupation, with megalithic walls and a Doric temple on the Rocca dating from the 5th–4th centuries BCE.
The Cathedral (Duomo)
he Cathedral of Cefalù is a Norman-era basilica begun in 1131 under Roger II and completed in the 12th–13th centuries; its fortress-like façade, twin towers, and sumptuous Byzantine mosaics in the apse make it a key example of the Arab-Norman-Byzantine synthesis and one of the sites included in the UNESCO World Heritage listing for Arab-Norman Palermo and the Cathedrals of Cefalù and Monreale.
